Retail golfers boost charity gift

A record contribution of £9,500 to Save the Children was the result of the recent 2004 Charity Golf Day co-hosted by Nottingham and Northampton-based Retail Assist and Adams Childrenswear. The event, now in its third year, took place at its traditional venue of Kilworth Springs Golf Club near Lutterworth. The sum raised for charity was £4,000 higher than in the previous year.

Gary Wolstenholme, often referred to as the world's number one amateur golfer, joined the co-hosts to encourage and appraise the performance of the competitors.

Rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the participants and the event surpassed its two predecessors in all respects. This year, it attracted more than 100 golfers from across the retail industry who, together with their business partners, gathered to enjoy some friendly competition and to dig deep in their pockets for a worthy cause.

26 teams represented a number of high-profile retailers together with retail technology providers and other professional partners who are strong in the sector.

Financial support was generous and included a number of sponsored holes, a range of prizes for individual and team performance, and an auction of tickets to Arsenal's 1st UEFA Champions League home game and to Leicester Tigers.

The winning team came from storecard provider, Style Financial Services, who delivered an impeccable performance from a 3-man team.

Although buffeted by unseasonable winds, Geoff Lloyd of Retail Assist impressed fellow players by carrying off the longest drive prize for the second year in succession.

Commented Gary Broughton, Project Services Director at Retail Assist and a member of the company's team, "Once again, our event brought together a real cross-section of keen golfers from across the retail industry. We all had a great time and our thanks go out to them all for helping us to break our previous donation record to one of the most worthwhile international charities."

Adams Chief Executive, Michael Hobbs, thanked everyone who helped to make the Golf Day such a success, "We were particularly pleased to have beaten last year's fundraising total through the generosity of all our business partners."
